Are you interested in finding out a little more about Christianity? Why don’t you start exploring here?
Christianity is not a set of rules to obey — it is about having a relationship with the God who made you to know Him and enjoy Him forever. Going to church, praying, or even believing in God doesn’t make you a Christian. A Christian is someone who enjoys a personal relationship with God, made possible when we receive forgiveness from Jesus Christ who died for our sin and seek to live God’s way by following Jesus as our King.
Here’s a more detailed explanation…
God is the loving Creator of our world and everything in it (Genesis 1). He made us in His image to know Him and enjoy Him, and He values and loves each person He created. He gives us life, everything we need for it, and every good gift we enjoy.
The bad news, however, is that we have all turned away from God (Romans 3:10-12). We accept His gifts, but have little regard for Him as our good God, and how He wants us to live before Him and relate to Him. Instead, we do what seems right in our own eyes instead of what is right in His eyes, and we relate to God on our terms, instead of His terms. God calls this sin.
Our sin makes a mess of His world, often a mess of our lives, and it also cuts us off from a relationship with God. God is angry with the way we treat Him, the way we treat others, and the way we treat His world. And God cares too much for His world and you and me in it just to turn a blind eye to the way we have lived and the things we have done to each other, and to Him. God has set a day called the Day of Judgement when He will bring to account every person who has ever lived, and because of our sin, He will be just and right to punish us and remove us from His presence forever (the Bible tells us that we are destined for a place of eternal punishment called the “Lake of Fire” — Revelation 20:11-15).
But there is good news… Because of God’s great love for you and me, He has not left us without hope. He sent His divine Son Jesus into our world to rescue us from the punishment we deserve, and to offer us a fresh start with God (John 3:16). Jesus didn’t just come to teach us and to help the sick. He came to take God’s punishment for our sin by dying in our place on a cross. On the third day after His death, Jesus was raised back to life never to die again, and God has made Him King over all creation. Through His death for our sin, Jesus now offers us forgiveness from God and through His resurrection from the dead, He offers us new life in relationship with God (1 Corinthians 15:3-4, Ephesians 2:1-10).
How can you experience the joy of being reconciled with God and enjoying life in relationship with Him? God simply requires the following:
- Confess to God that you have been living a life rebelling against His rightful rule or spending your life ignoring Him, tell Him you are sorry and that you want to turn back to Him (Acts 17:30-31).
- Ask Jesus to forgive you of your sin, and thank Him that He took the punishment you deserved when He died on the cross so that you could be forgiven (Luke 24:45-48, Romans 10:9-13, 1 John 1:7-9).
- Begin to follow Jesus by living with Him as the King of your life — ie begin to live life and relate to God the way He says, not the way you say (Acts 2:36, Mark 8:34-38)
What do I do now?
If you have responded to God and asked Jesus to forgive you as outlined above, and if you have meant what you said, then welcome to God’s family! To help you grow in your relationship with God and trust and follow Jesus, it’s important that you now begin to read the Bible and pray to God daily. A good place to start reading the Bible is at the start of the New Testament. Also, find a local church that teaches God’s Word faithfully and where you are loved and encouraged by other Christians. If you need any help finding a good local church, ask someone who you know is a genuine Christian, or feel free to contact us.
